The DBT-ICT Centre for Energy Biosciences, ICT, Mumbai

The DBT-ICT Centre for Energy Biosciences (DBT-ICT-CEB) is a unique place that integrates basic and translational science capabilities for bioprocess development and scale up. Funded by The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, India, the Centre was formally inaugurated in May 2009. Established at a total cumulative cost equivalent to more than USD 15 million, the Centre is a part of the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) at Matunga, Mumbai, a deemed University under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956. The ICT is a premier university devoted to education training, research and industrial collaboration in chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology and bio-processing.  Based on its stellar performance over the years, it has been awarded the Elite Status and Centre of Excellence by Government of Maharashtra in the year 2013.

The projects and technical programs at the Centre are coordinated by Prof. Arvind Lali. The Centre is focused on providing cutting edge technologies to the country in the areas of Bioenergy and Industrial Biotechnology and believes in building multidisciplinary capacity for development of integrated technology packages.

The Centre has attracted a number of industrial and academic collaborations as a result of its reputation of conducting cutting edge research and delivering viable and scalable solutions to the biotech industry.


Arvind Lali (Professor of Chemical Engineering) is a well known expert in the area of bioseparations and biotransformations and has provided technical support and solutions for over 30 years to many Indian and International Pharma/Biotech companies. He heads India’s first DBT funded Centre for Energy Biosciences at ICT, with objectives to create a sustainable R&D platform for biofuels and is involved in turning a number of potentially impacting technologies into demonstration plants for subsequent scale up and multiplication across agricultural economies.

Till date he has filed 70 patents and has secured >15 million USD in funding since the inception of the Centre in 2009.  He is recipient of prestigious awards such as Vasvik Award in Biological Sciences and Technology and IIChE NOCIL award for excellence in design or development of process plant or equipment.

He is an esteemed member of Core Group of Scientists in the area of Bioenergy with Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India and India Task Forces in Biofuels; Bioproducts and Bioprocesses, Ministry of Science and Technology.
